San Valentine

San Valentine was the first Bishop in Terni, he died in 273 by order of the Roman Prefect Placido Furio during the persecutions oedred by the Emperor Aurelius. In 1644 the citizens of Terni proclaimed him Patron of the town.
His international fame is due to a legend, born in the Anglo-Saxson countries,  according to which he used to give to his you visitors a flower from his garden.
Between two of these young people began a love which flowered to a very happy union and them example was followed by many other couples.
This ispired the Saint yo dedicate one day a year to a blessing for married couples in general.
That is the reason why San Valentine become the Saint of all lovers: the celebrations in his honour are on 14th February, a  day dedicated to all people in love.
The present Basilica was built in 1605 above the ruins of previous temples and it has works of a certain interest especially in the crypt.
